Mercer County Park encompasses over 2,500 acres covering areas of the Townships of West Windsor, Hamilton and Lawrence in New Jersey. The Park has year-round facilities for all ages and hosts hundreds of diverse events throughout the year.
Knowing that the Park did not have a defined look and feel, we developed a logo for the park. When researching the history of this Park we discovered that it was man-made, including the lake. Prior to this construction, this area was open space. It was this understanding that inspired the logo. What defines a park from nature is the fact that there are defined boundaries and navigational signage to help direct the user. Those two elements, boundaries and signage, inspired the logo which takes its cues from fencing and finger-posts. Additionally because this park is still growing and because this park develops rich programming, we designed a logo that would algorithmically change every time it was used. Though the elements of the logo would not change, including the typeface, and structural elements, it's positioning and configuration would. This dynamic aspect reinforces the growing nature of the park as well as the ever-changing programming.
Because the park does not have a wayfinding system that can adjust to reflect the diverse programming of the park, nor show how the park structure shifts to accommodate large events, an app was needed to be able to showcase the changing content and provide users a means to find specific events or fields with ease. The resulting app provides users a comprehensive portal to the park. Aside from a comprehensive directory of the park's offerings, as well as real-time routing to help users find their destination, the app provides a trail guide as well as an event's database that shows the day's acitivities.
